Jung's acausal connecting principle — the theory that meaningful coincidences reveal an underlying order connecting psyche and matter — and what quantum entanglement, non-locality, and David Bohm's implicate order suggest about whether he was right
Everyone has experienced it. You are thinking of someone you haven't spoken to in years — and the phone rings. You dream of an event the night before it occurs. You read a word you have never encountered before, then see it three times in the same day. A decision you've been unable to make is suddenly resolved when a stranger on a train says something that addresses it precisely, without knowing they have done so.
The standard response is to dismiss such experiences as coincidence — the inevitable result of the fact that the mind notices and remembers pattern-confirming events while forgetting the hundreds of similar moments that led nowhere. This explanation is reasonable. It is also, Jung argued after decades of careful clinical observation, incomplete. Not because every apparent coincidence is meaningful, but because some coincidences carry a quality — a precision of fit between inner state and outer event, a timing that exceeds what probability comfortably explains — that the dismissal fails to address honestly.
In 1952, Jung published Synchronicity: An Acausal Connecting Principle — a work he had been developing for thirty years, that he considered among the most important and most difficult of his career. The concept he proposed was simple in statement and radical in implication: alongside the causal connections between events that science studies, there exists a second principle of connection — acausal, non-local, and organised by meaning rather than by mechanism. When a psychic event and a physical event occur simultaneously and are connected by meaning rather than cause, Jung called this synchronicity.
He did not propose it as a mystical claim. He proposed it as a scientific hypothesis — one that required the collaboration of a physicist to frame properly. That physicist was Wolfgang Pauli, Nobel laureate and one of the architects of quantum mechanics. Their joint publication of 1952 placed synchronicity alongside quantum non-locality as evidence for a single underlying principle: that at the deepest level of reality, the separation between psyche and matter — between inner and outer — is less absolute than ordinary experience suggests.
What Synchronicity Is — and What It Is Not
Jung was precise about what synchronicity meant. It is not telepathy — the transmission of information from one mind to another. It is not precognition — the direct foreknowledge of a future event. And it is not magical thinking — the naive assumption that wishing causes outcomes. These confusions have obscured the concept in popular usage, reducing it to a vague synonym for "meaningful coincidence" and losing what made Jung's formulation genuinely original.
Synchronicity, properly understood, requires three elements to be present simultaneously. First, a psychic state of particular intensity or emotional significance — typically one involving the deeper layers of the unconscious: an activated complex, a dream that has not yet been understood, a moment of grief or longing or creative urgency. Second, an outer event in the physical world that is objectively real and independently verifiable. Third, a meaningful connection between the two that cannot be explained by causal relationship — the inner state did not cause the outer event, and the outer event did not cause the inner state. They coincide in meaning without either causing the other.
The meaning, crucially, is not imposed by the observer. It is recognised. There is a quality to genuine synchronistic experience — what Jung called the numinosum — that distinguishes it from the ordinary pattern-seeking that produces false positives. The coincidence arrives with a sense of objective significance that exceeds subjective wish or expectation. Something in the situation is being addressed that the ego did not know needed addressing.
Jung's Three Types of Synchronicity
Type One — Simultaneous
A psychic content — a thought, image, or feeling — coincides with an external event occurring at the same time. The classic form: thinking of someone at the exact moment they call or appear. The inner and outer occur together without causal connection.
Type Two — Distant
A psychic content coincides with an event occurring at a distance that cannot be perceived through the ordinary senses. A mother wakes in the night with acute anxiety at the moment her child is injured in another city. Verified later by comparing times.
Type Three — Temporal
A psychic content coincides with a future event that cannot have been known or predicted at the time of the inner experience. Precognitive dreams that are subsequently verified — not as prediction but as meaningful anticipation of what was already forming.
Jung recounted one case more often than any other as an illustration of synchronicity in clinical practice. A highly intellectualised young woman was in analysis with him, making little progress because her rational mind resisted every move toward the irrational dimension of experience. She had dreamed of a golden scarab — a symbol of rebirth in Egyptian mythology — and was recounting the dream to Jung when he heard, behind him, a gentle tapping at the closed window.
He opened it. A large insect flew in — a scarabaeid beetle, the closest European equivalent to the Egyptian scarab, golden-green in colour. Jung caught it and handed it to his patient. "Here is your scarab," he said.
The effect was immediate. The woman's rational defences, which no amount of direct psychological work had been able to shift, broke open. Something outside the consulting room had participated in the therapeutic moment — had arrived, unbidden, at precisely the moment it was needed. The analysis resumed on an entirely different basis.
Jung was not claiming the universe had intervened on his patient's behalf. He was observing that a psychic state of sufficient intensity — a complex, an archetype activated at depth — appeared, in some cases, to be accompanied by meaningful external events. The connection was real. Its mechanism was unknown. That unknown is what he named synchronicity.
The Physics of Non-Local Connection
When Jung first proposed synchronicity in the 1930s, he was aware that it lacked a physical framework. The mechanistic physics of Newton — the dominant scientific worldview — had no place for non-local connection. Cause preceded effect. Signals required time to travel. The universe was a collection of separate objects interacting through forces that diminished with distance. In that framework, meaningful coincidence was either causal (and therefore explainable) or meaningless (and therefore dismissible).
Quantum mechanics changed the framework. Not gradually, and not by adjusting the existing model, but by demonstrating that the universe at its fundamental level does not behave as classical physics assumed. The discoveries that most directly illuminated Jung's proposal were those that revealed non-locality — the demonstrated fact that the quantum world contains connections that operate independently of spatial separation and temporal sequence.
Quantum Entanglement
Two particles that have interacted become entangled — permanently correlated regardless of distance. A change in the state of one is instantaneously reflected in the other with no signal passing between them. Einstein called it "spooky action at a distance" and spent years trying to eliminate it. Bell's theorem and Aspect's 1982 experiments proved it is real. Non-local connection is a feature of physical reality.
Bell's Theorem
Physicist John Bell proved mathematically in 1964 that if quantum mechanics is correct, nature must be non-local — there must be correlations between distant events that cannot be explained by any signal or pre-existing agreement between the particles. Subsequent experiments have confirmed Bell's prediction repeatedly. The universe is, at its foundation, non-locally connected.
The Observer Effect
The act of measurement — of conscious observation — affects the quantum system being measured. The wave function, describing all possible states of a particle, collapses to a single state upon observation. Some interpretations of quantum mechanics, including those of von Neumann and Wigner, explicitly require consciousness as the collapse agent. The observer is not separate from the observed.
Retrocausality
Several serious interpretations of quantum mechanics — including the transactional interpretation of John Cramer and the two-state vector formalism — allow for causal influence moving backward in time. The future state of a particle can, in these models, influence its present behaviour. Temporal non-locality — connection across time as well as space — is not forbidden by physics.
David Bohm and the Implicate Order
Of all the physicists whose work bears on synchronicity, David Bohm — who worked with Einstein at Princeton and later with Niels Bohr — developed the most comprehensive framework for understanding how non-local connection might operate. His concept of the implicate order, developed in his 1980 work Wholeness and the Implicate Order, proposes that the apparently separate objects and events of ordinary experience — what he called the explicate order — are surface expressions of a deeper, enfolded reality in which everything is non-locally connected.
Bohm's image was the hologram. In a holographic plate, information about the whole image is distributed throughout every part of the plate — cut the plate in half, and each half still contains the whole image, only less clearly. The explicate order — the world of separate objects in space and time — is, in Bohm's model, like the projected image: apparently discrete, apparently local, apparently following the rules of cause and effect. Beneath it, in the implicate order, everything that appears separate is enfolded into a seamless whole.
The parallel with Jung's collective unconscious is striking and, Bohm acknowledged, not coincidental. He was familiar with Jung's work and found in the implicate order a physical basis for what depth psychology described from the inside: the sense that beneath the surface of individual experience lies a deeper layer of reality in which the boundaries between self and other, inner and outer, past and future are less absolute — a layer that dreams and synchronicities momentarily make visible.
Bohm's Model — and Its Jungian Parallel
Synchronicity in Dreams — The Most Direct Evidence
For anyone working seriously with dreams, the question of synchronicity is not abstract. It arises in practice — in the clinical or self-analytical situation — with enough regularity that dismissing it entirely requires a deliberate act of theoretical commitment that the evidence does not obviously support.
The most common form of synchronistic dream experience is what researchers call the prodromal dream — a dream that appears to anticipate a physical event, particularly a medical event, before any conscious or measurable symptoms are present. The psyche, in these cases, appears to know something about the state of the body that ordinary diagnostic methods have not yet detected. Jungian analysts have documented such cases across decades of clinical practice; some have been prospectively verified.
More striking, and less easily explained, are the cases in which a dreamer's inner imagery coincides with an outer event involving another person — a death, an accident, a significant moment in the life of someone close to them — without any information having been transmitted through ordinary channels. Jung collected many such cases. What distinguished them, in his account, was not simply the coincidence of content but the quality of the dream — its vividness, its emotional weight, the sense that it carried a different order of significance from ordinary dream material.
- Prodromal medical dreams. Dreams that symbolically represent a physical condition before symptoms appear — the classic example being dreams of injury or damage to a specific organ subsequently diagnosed with disease. The unconscious psyche appears to register somatic information before it reaches conscious awareness.
- Death announcement dreams. Dreams of a person's death, or of farewell imagery involving them, occurring at or near the time of their actual death without prior knowledge. Among the most frequently reported and most carefully documented class of synchronistic experience across cultures.
- Problem-solving synchronicities. A problem occupying the conscious mind is addressed by an external event — a book falling open to the relevant page, a stranger making an observation that resolves the impasse, a dream offering the missing element — with a precision of fit that exceeds what chance comfortably accommodates.
- Threshold synchronicities. At moments of major life transition — death of a significant person, beginning of analysis, a decision of fundamental importance — the frequency of synchronistic events appears to increase. As though the activation of deep archetypal patterns produces a temporary increase in the permeability of the boundary between inner and outer.

The deeper implication of synchronicity — the one Jung and Pauli converged on in their final years of correspondence — is that the apparent duality between psyche and matter, between inner experience and outer event, is itself a surface phenomenon. Beneath it lies what the medieval alchemists called the unus mundus: the unified world, a single reality from which both physical and psychological events emerge as complementary aspects of one thing.
In Bohm's language: the explicate order of separate objects and events, both physical and mental, unfolds from a single implicate order that contains them both in undivided wholeness. In Jung's language: synchronicity is what happens when the unus mundus briefly becomes visible — when the underlying unity of psyche and matter surfaces in the form of a meaningful coincidence that neither psychology nor physics alone can explain.
This is not a mystical claim dressed in scientific language. It is the convergent conclusion of two of the twentieth century's most rigorous thinkers — one approaching from the interior of the psyche, one from the exterior of physics — arriving at the same territory from opposite directions. What synchronicity points toward is not the suspension of natural law but the existence of a deeper natural law — one that organises reality by meaning as well as by mechanism, and whose operation becomes briefly visible precisely at the moments when ordinary causality is insufficient to account for what has happened.
For the person working with dreams and depth psychology, synchronicity is not merely an interesting theoretical concept. It is a lived dimension of the analytic process — the moments when the unconscious makes itself known not only in the dream but in the waking world, not only through symbol but through event. Learning to recognise it, to take it seriously without inflating it, and to ask what it is compensating for — what the psyche is trying to bring into consciousness through this convergence of inner and outer — is as much a part of Jungian work as the interpretation of any dream symbol.
Key Scientific Research — Synchronicity & Non-Local Connection
Alain Aspect et al. (1982). Experimental confirmation of quantum entanglement — non-local correlation between particles at a distance, with no signal passing between them. Earned Aspect the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics. Established non-local connection as a demonstrated feature of physical reality, providing the first rigorous scientific basis for the kind of acausal connection Jung proposed.
Dean Radin, Institute of Noetic Sciences (ongoing). Meta-analyses of parapsychological research — telepathy, precognition, presentiment — consistently show effect sizes that are small but statistically robust, far exceeding chance across thousands of experimental trials. Radin's 2006 book Entangled Minds explicitly frames these results in terms of quantum non-locality and proposes a physical basis for synchronistic phenomena.
Rupert Sheldrake, morphic resonance research (1981–present). Sheldrake's controversial but extensively documented research on morphic fields proposes a form of non-local information storage and transfer in biological systems. His telephone telepathy and animal anticipation experiments, replicated across multiple investigators, show statistically significant results consistent with a non-local connecting principle operating in living systems.
Princeton PEAR laboratory (1979–2007). The Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research laboratory conducted nearly three decades of controlled experiments on mind-matter interaction, documenting small but statistically consistent effects of human intention on random physical processes. Effect sizes were modest — but their consistency across millions of experimental trials places them beyond reasonable attribution to chance.
Working With Synchronicity — A Jungian Orientation
Take the experience seriously without inflating it. Not every coincidence is synchronistic. The test is not numerical improbability but meaningful precision — the sense that what has converged addresses something the psyche needed to address. Genuine synchronicity carries the quality Jung called numinosity: a sense of objective significance that is recognised rather than projected.
Ask what it is compensating for. The same question one brings to a dream applies to a synchronistic event: what is this addressing? What aspect of my current psychological situation does this coincidence illuminate or challenge? Synchronicity, like the dream, tends to speak to exactly what the conscious position is missing or avoiding.
Notice the activation state. Synchronicities tend to cluster around moments of psychological intensity — activated complexes, major life transitions, the opening of analysis, creative breakthroughs, grief. The deeper the unconscious activation, the more permeable the boundary between inner and outer appears to become. This is consistent with both the Jungian model and the quantum model of non-local connection.
Record and reflect — do not explain away. The habitual dismissal of synchronistic experience as "mere coincidence" is, from a Jungian perspective, a defensive manoeuvre of the ego — exactly the same manoeuvre that dismisses dreams as random neural noise. Both defences protect the ego's sense of being a closed, self-sufficient system unconnected to the deeper currents of the psyche and the world. Both defences have a cost.
