What Is Consciousness?
A Jungian depth psychology perspective on the hardest question in science — what the unconscious reveals about the nature of mind that neuroscience alone cannot explain
Consciousness is the one thing every human being knows with absolute certainty — and the one thing science has been unable to explain. You know you are reading these words. You know there is something it feels like to read them. That felt, interior quality of experience — what philosophers call qualia — is what makes consciousness the strangest problem in all of science.
Neuroscience can map the brain with extraordinary precision. It can identify which regions activate during perception, emotion, memory, and decision-making. What it cannot explain is why any of that neural activity is accompanied by experience at all. Why is there something it feels like to see red, rather than simply a wavelength of light triggering a receptor? This is what philosopher David Chalmers named the hard problem of consciousness — and it remains, decades later, unsolved.
Carl Jung approached this problem from an entirely different direction. Not from the outside — measuring, scanning, mapping — but from the inside, through seventy years of clinical observation, dream analysis, and rigorous self-examination. What he found suggested something that mainstream science is only now beginning to take seriously: consciousness may not be produced by the brain. It may be encountered by it.
The Hard Problem — Why Neuroscience Alone Cannot Answer
Modern neuroscience has made astonishing progress in understanding the brain. We know that damage to the prefrontal cortex alters decision-making. We know that the amygdala is central to fear response. We know that REM sleep activates the visual cortex and suppresses the prefrontal regions responsible for logical reasoning — which is why dreams feel so real and yet so strange.
What neuroscience has not solved — and what its most honest practitioners acknowledge — is the relationship between neural activity and subjective experience. The brain produces electrochemical signals. Experience is something else entirely. The gap between the two is not a technical problem waiting for better equipment. It is a conceptual problem: we have no agreed-upon framework for how physical processes give rise to inner experience.
The Hard Problem — Four Questions Neuroscience Cannot Yet Answer
- Why is there experience at all? Neural activity is measurable. The feeling of experience is not. Why does subjective experience accompany brain processes?
- Where does consciousness begin and end? Is a sleeping person conscious? An infant? An animal? An artificial intelligence system of sufficient complexity?
- What explains altered states? Dreams, near-death experiences, psychedelic states, mystical experiences — all produce consciousness that feels more real than ordinary waking life. Why?
- What is the self? The feeling of being a unified "I" is experienced as continuous — yet the brain is a distributed system with no central location. Where does the self live?
Jung's Answer — The Psyche Is Larger Than Consciousness
Jung's most fundamental insight about consciousness is also his most radical: what we call consciousness is only a small part of the psyche. The ego — the "I" that we identify as ourselves, the centre of our waking awareness — is not the whole of mind. It is, as Jung described it, an island in a vast ocean.
Below the surface of ego-consciousness lies the personal unconscious — the repository of forgotten memories, repressed experiences, and the emotionally charged clusters of memory and feeling that Jung called complexes. Deeper still lies the collective unconscious — a layer of the psyche that is not personal at all, but shared across all of humanity, inherited rather than learned, containing the universal patterns of human experience that Jung called archetypes.
This is Jung's answer to the question of consciousness: consciousness is not the totality of mind, but the portion of mind that has become illuminated — lit up, as it were, by the light of the ego's awareness. Most of what the psyche is doing, most of what it knows, most of what drives human behaviour, occurs below that threshold of illumination, in the dark waters of the unconscious.

The Observer and the Observed — Where Jung Meets Quantum Physics
One of the most striking convergences between Jungian psychology and modern physics is the problem of the observer. In quantum mechanics, the act of observation appears to affect the system being observed. The famous double-slit experiment demonstrates that particles behave differently when measured than when not measured — as though the presence of a conscious observer collapses what was previously a field of pure possibility into a single outcome.
Jung spent years in correspondence with physicist Wolfgang Pauli — a Nobel laureate and one of the founders of quantum mechanics — exploring precisely this territory. Both men were struck by the parallel: in quantum physics, the observer cannot be cleanly separated from the observed. In Jungian psychology, the ego cannot be cleanly separated from the unconscious it attempts to study. In both cases, the act of observing is itself part of the phenomenon.
This led Jung to a conclusion that was controversial in his time and remains controversial now: consciousness may not be a product of matter, but may be a fundamental property of reality itself — something the brain participates in rather than generates. The psyche, in this view, is not contained inside the skull. It extends into the world, and the world participates in it.

Modern neuroscience has, in a number of significant respects, validated what Jung proposed on purely psychological grounds. The existence of unconscious processing — the fact that the brain performs vast amounts of information processing below the threshold of awareness — is now established beyond reasonable doubt. Studies consistently show that decisions appear in brain activity several hundred milliseconds before the person is consciously aware of making them.
The default mode network — a set of brain regions that activate during rest, daydreaming, and self-referential thought — has attracted particular interest. When the brain is not focused on external tasks, it turns inward, producing spontaneous imagery, narrative, and symbolic content that bears a striking resemblance to what Jung described as the activity of the unconscious. The default mode network is most active during REM sleep — the sleep stage in which vivid dreaming occurs.
What neuroscience has not explained — and what its most rigorous researchers openly acknowledge — is how any of this neural activity becomes conscious experience. The correlation between brain states and mental states is well-established. The mechanism by which one produces the other is not. This gap — what neuroscientist Christof Koch calls the "explanatory gap" — is precisely where Jungian depth psychology has something that empirical science currently lacks: a detailed phenomenology of the interior.
What Modern Research Reveals
The unconscious is real and active. Neuroscience confirms that the vast majority of brain processing occurs below conscious awareness. The unconscious is not a metaphor — it is a measurable fact. Studies by neuroscientist Benjamin Libet and others show brain activity preceding conscious decision-making by up to 550 milliseconds.
The default mode network mirrors Jung's unconscious. The brain's "resting state" network produces spontaneous symbolic and narrative content — exactly what Jung described as unconscious activity. It is most active during dreaming and creative states, and least active during focused external attention.
Near-death experiences challenge materialist models. Cardiologist Pim van Lommel's prospective study of 344 cardiac arrest survivors, published in The Lancet (2001), found that 18% reported clear conscious experiences during periods of flat-line brain activity — experiences of a kind that strictly materialist models of consciousness cannot easily account for.
The hard problem remains unsolved. Despite decades of effort, no consensus exists on how neural activity produces subjective experience. Prominent consciousness researchers including David Chalmers, Thomas Nagel, and Roger Penrose have argued that new theoretical frameworks — beyond current neuroscience — will be required.
Consciousness in Dreams — The Jungian Window
For Jung, the dream was the royal road to the unconscious — not because it was mysterious or exotic, but because it was the most direct and regular evidence that consciousness is not the whole of mind. Every night, without exception, the ego-consciousness of waking life retreats, and another kind of consciousness takes its place: one that is spontaneous, symbolic, sometimes terrifying, sometimes luminous, always meaningful.
The dreaming mind does not simply replay the day's events. It transforms them — selects from them, amplifies them, wraps them in symbol and metaphor, connects them to experiences from years or decades past, and occasionally introduces images and figures that seem to come from no personal experience at all. These latter — what Jung called archetypal dreams — are the clearest evidence that consciousness opens, in sleep, onto something larger than the personal.
People who have never studied mythology dream of labyrinths, of dying and being reborn, of wise old figures who offer counsel, of great serpents, of journeys across dark water. These images appear across cultures, across centuries, across individual life histories. They do not come from television or childhood memory. They come from what Jung named the collective unconscious — and their appearance in dreams is one of the most direct forms of evidence that consciousness is not enclosed within the individual skull.
Dreams as Direct Evidence of Non-Ego Consciousness
The dream ego is not the waking ego. In dreams, the "I" who experiences events is often passive, surprised, overwhelmed — a witness to a drama it did not script. This demonstrates that something other than the conscious ego is the author of the dream. Something in the psyche knows things the ego does not.
Archetypal dreams transcend personal biography. When dreamers with no knowledge of mythology dream of the Hero's journey, the descent into the underworld, or the encounter with the Wise Old Man — these images are not coming from personal memory. They are arising from what Jung termed the collective unconscious: the shared psychological inheritance of all humanity.
Dreams address the dreamer's actual condition. Jung observed that dreams consistently compensate for the one-sided attitudes of waking consciousness — not flattering the ego, but correcting it, challenging it, showing it what it refuses to see. This compensatory function implies a form of knowledge in the unconscious that the ego does not possess. Something in the psyche sees more clearly than the "I."
Individuation — Consciousness as a Lifelong Expansion
For Jung, the question "what is consciousness?" was never purely theoretical. It was practical and urgent — because the degree to which a human being is conscious determines the degree to which they are free. Unconscious content does not disappear because it is unacknowledged. It drives behaviour from below awareness, appearing as compulsions, projections, inexplicable attractions and aversions, repeated patterns of relationship and failure.
The process Jung called individuation is, at its core, the expansion of consciousness. Not the elimination of the unconscious — that is neither possible nor desirable — but the progressive illumination of it. The encounter with the shadow. The withdrawal of projections from others. The integration of the anima or animus. The emerging relationship with the Self. Each step brings more of what was unconscious into conscious awareness, and each step changes the person who undergoes it.
Consciousness, in this view, is not a fixed quantity that one either has or lacks. It is a capacity that grows — or fails to grow — across an entire lifetime. The goal of a Jungian understanding of consciousness is not a philosophical position but a lived orientation: the willingness to face what the unconscious presents, to take the dream seriously, to ask what in oneself remains in darkness — and to bring it, carefully and honestly, into the light.
Consciousness Expands Through the Shadow
The shadow contains what the ego has refused to acknowledge — not only darkness but unlived potential. Bringing shadow content into awareness is the first and most essential act of expanding consciousness.
Dreams Enlarge What We Know
The consistent Jungian instruction: take your dreams seriously. They are dispatches from the larger psyche — corrective, compensatory, and often more accurate about your actual condition than your waking self-image.
The Unconscious Is Not the Enemy
Jung distinguished his approach from Freud's precisely here. The unconscious is not simply a repository of repressed wishes. It is a living, purposive system that moves the individual toward wholeness — if consciousness cooperates.
The Self Holds the Whole
Beyond the ego, beyond the personal and collective unconscious, the Self is the organising centre of the total psyche. Individuation is the gradual, lifelong process of aligning the ego's awareness with the Self's direction.
The Question That Remains Open
Science has not solved the problem of consciousness. Neither has philosophy. Neither, in the end, did Jung — though he mapped its interior more carefully than anyone before or since. What Jung left us is not a final answer but a working orientation: consciousness is larger than we think it is, it extends into domains the ego cannot directly access, and the unconscious is not the enemy of consciousness but its necessary complement and source.
The question of what consciousness is cannot be answered from the outside alone. It requires the kind of interior attention that depth psychology makes possible — the willingness to work with dreams, to examine what one projects onto others, to face the shadow, to sit with the questions that do not resolve quickly. In that sense, the Jungian approach to consciousness is not merely a theory. It is a practice — the oldest and perhaps the most demanding form of scientific inquiry: the careful, sustained examination of the one thing each of us knows with absolute certainty exists.
